What are medical alert systems?
Medical alert systems connect a senior, or person who may be prone to falling or other emergency situation with a monitoring center that can dispatch emergency responders if needed.
What are medical alert devices?
Medical alert devices include both at-home systems and wearable, on-the go devices that allow seniors, or other people prone to falls or other emergency situations to quickly alert emergency responders should the need occur.
Typical on-the-go devices include pendents that can be worn around the neck or on a belt, watches or other items that include an emergency help button that communicates with a monitoring center when pressed. Some on-the-go devices include fall detection that automatically alerts the monitoring center should a potential fall be detected.
What happens when an emergency alert button is pressed?
When the emergency alert button is pressed a responder from the monitoring center will ask the wearer what is wrong and then will proceed to dispatch emergency responders. With Connected Caregiver, the device provides the monitoring center with the exact GPS location of the wearer so emergency responders know specifically where to go.
How much do emergency alert systems cost?
Emergency, or medical alert systems can vary in price. For many solutions, the customer is required to pay an up front device cost and then subscribe to a monthly monitoring service. Up-front devices can range from no cost, up to a few hundred dollars. Connected Caregiver does not charge a device fee.
Subscription services can also vary significantly on price. However, it is important to compare what items are included at each price point. Some services start with the emergency alert button service as low as $25 per month. However, once fall detection and GPS location are added, these basic subscription fees increase significantly. Connected Caregiver provides emergency alerts, fall detection, GPS location, first motion, geo-fencing and more for one simple $45 per month fee.
What happens when a fall is detected by a medical alert device?
When a fall is detected by a medical alert device the monitoring center will immediately reach out to the wearer through the 2-way radio on the medical alert device to ask if a fall occurred and ask about the condition of the senior, or wearer. If everything is okay, then nothing else will happen. If the wearer needs help or does not respond, then emergency responders will be dispatched to their location using the device’s GPS location.
With Connected Caregiver, the caregiver will be alerted immediately as soon as the fall is detected using the customizable alerts through the app.
Does Medicare cover the cost of medical alert systems?
Currently, medical alert systems are not eligible to be covered by Medicare.
What is the difference between personal emergency response systems (PERS), medical emergency response system (MERS), health monitor or fall monitor?
Personal emergency response system (PERS), medical emergency response system (MERS), and fall monitor are all used interchangeably to refer to the response system used by senior adults in the event there is an emergency.
Will my medical alert device work in the shower?
We cannot speak to all devices, but the device your senior loved one will receive with Connected Caregiver is waterproof and will work in the event a fall is detected while in the shower or bath.
